Notes from Jan

Don’t Worry! Really?

February 19, 2024

It’s school vacation week so some of the Grands and I are off on an adventure. So you won’t be hearing from me for a little longer than a week. Which may be good news to some of you. Meanwhile, I challenge you (and me) to settle into God’s faithfulness and leave worries behind. And to stay alert. Not for dangers but for ways God shows up. Grace comes at unexpected and undeserved times.

This morning I read in Buechner’s Listening to Your Life, “If we really had our eyes open, we would see that all moments are key moments.” So, back to worrying. Or not. The Message translation of Matthew 6: 33 reads, “Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.”

Easy to write. And so I pray that this season of Lent will help me do better at practicing what I write.

Meanwhile, I will take time-off from technology. As Anne Lamott said, “Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you.”

Here’s to less worrying and more unplugging.

Can’t hurt.

Could help.

Ta Ta!

Jan, have a wonderful trip! We will wave at you from across the sea. And I agree with you and Buechner – all moments ARE key moments. None to be wasted, all to be savored. Waiting expectantly for what God will do without expectation.
    We thank God for you!

And I thank God for you, very dear Maggie. Have another wonder-full time in Stavanger, Norway. What a beautiful country! And I know you and Mike will be blessed as you bless those you serve and share life with.

Exactly the message I needed on this day, dear Jan. Thank you. Thank God.

Good to know I’ve got company. Cheering you on and praying for you, dear Shirley.

Thanks for the encouragement and the spiritual permission to flake out “some more.” God used my accident to help me focus on what I have and to ignore whatever I don’t have and thought I needed. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation by prayer, petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God which passes all understanding will guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus.” Well, the first step was to post this verse on my monitor and now all I have to do is believe and live it. I wish I had written this or, at least, read it much earlier in my life. Travel well. Blessings, Dale
