About Ace Hardware, and Other Places God's Looking to "Hire"
Just to clarify, it was September, when Santa showed up at my Ace Hardware. Maybe it’s because I was wandering up and down aisles, looking a combination of wide-eyed kid and helpless old woman. I’m never sure these days why offers to help show up. But I’m grateful.
So back to the aisle stacked with soaps, disinfectants and toilet bowl cleaners. Oh, and just to clarify, it was his beard and face that gave him away, not his traditional outfit.
I stood staring long at the options galore,
When a white bearded man appeared in the store.
He smiled and he asked, “Do you need any help?”
And to make this poem rhyme, I thought, “Got any Kelp?”
But I didn’t, so we ended up chatting a bit,
Then without one “Ho, Ho,” he told me his schtick.
Imagine a beard, white and perfectly groomed,
You’d know he was Santa, if he walked in your room.
And that’s what he did, althought Bill was his name.
Which I learned from his card, passed along without shame.
So what’s not to love about help, smiling faces
Seems God has his saints, hired in places like Ace’s.
Well, we never know who needs a visit from Saint Nick, especially on an ordinary day. Red suits and beards not required. But offers to help, share a smile, or listen are gifts that don’t come in packages. They come from the heart.
So, sometimes white hair has its advantages. I’m sure that’s part of why doors are held open, seats offered and words repeated LOUD enough for me to hear, after the third time.
So take heart and take notice of someone who could use a smile, a listening ear or an offer to help.
And no, I don’t need any Kelp.
Thanks, anyway.
No wonder I like spending time with you.
So, Merry Monday to you, may your worries take flight,
For today is God’s gift, make good use, take delight.
So stay close to Jesus, darkness flees in His Light,
Then, when every day’s done, may you have a Good Night.
