After All's Said and Done

 This political milieu's highlighted blurred boundaries between secular and sacred, sound bites masquerading as wisdom, and sloppy speech that stymies true communication, the latest, I'm sorry if  I offended anyone.

Trump's recent words reveal deeper issues than righting a political ship.

This morning I read a quote by author, Rachel Held Evans,"Misogyny is not a tone problem, it's a sin problem."

Phillip Yancey, one of my favorite authors, is one of a growing number of Christians speaking out against Trump's words, questioning how some evangelicals see him as a hero.  Yancey's writings, challenge the church and Christ's followers to think, to act. His newest book, Vanishing Grace, flows from his bestseller,  What's so Amazing About Grace? 

In a recent interview, Yancey said,"The church is selling its soul for access to power."

Trump's words left me feeling disgusted and angry on behalf of women and girls, but grateful for men who truly love and respect women and hopeful that people of faith will speak out against misogynist thinking, which leads to vile actions.  We shouldn't be surprised at the global tsunami of sex trafficking, human slavery, when a possible leader of this country, views women as he does.

When Trump said, "Anyone who knows me, knows these words don't reflect who I am," I remembered Jesus' words,"Out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks." That challenges me, too. What we watch and read, how we act, not just during a political campaign, but day after day when we talk to and about each other, fills the heart until one day, when we least expect or want, it overflows.  Suddenly, what we thought no one of consequence saw or heard, spills out, noticed by the only One who matters, when all's said and done.
