Don't Eat Kale
Strange mandate to find on the rear end of a car: Don't eat kale. But I laugh, shake my head and wonder about the driver. Bumper stickers talk. Some yell! And some generate more than a passing thought. Like, "And God bless the rest of the world, too."
So what's generated this topic? Well, the other day I lunched with two dear friends, Paul and Darlia. One asked, "Where do you get your ideas for your blogs?" Part of me wanted to say something really holy like, "I hear a voice telling me to take off my slippers and listen up." UP being the operative word. But truth won. So I confessed, ideas come from books, conversations, current events, concerns, sermons and nudges. I believe in God nudges but in a climate where God talk gets used to justify all kinds of actions and reactions, I'm cautious to credit/blame God.
But mostly, I write about what's going on inside and around me. I write about growing up and growing older. And I pray before, during and after each post, not to feel holy but because I need God's help. I ask God to bless and encourage the readers and protect them from being harmed by my words. Words draw us together or dig a ditch between us. We never speak, write or act in isolation.
So yesterday, as I drove to church, traffic stopped. And that's when I read that bumper sticker: Don't Eat Kale. OK. I know, for some, Kale is a four letter word. Like, please, bring me a leaf or two of iceberg lettuce for my BLT, not Kale. But when I think of all the things to fear, or avoid, Kale doesn't make the cut.
And that nudges me to ask, what do I fear today? What do I need to avoid? For sure, the words I listen to, write or speak top my list. Need a laugh about now? My friend Laura, sent this to me, "Some people need to use a glue stick instead of Chapstick...Just sayin'. "
Which I'm aware of when I look in the mirror or sing an old hymn, like we sang yesterday in church. Just As I Am. Take hope! We sang it in the Episcopal Church! The old Baptist part of me wants to go forward whenever I sing or hear that song. Especially, when I sing these words:
"Just as I am, though tossed about with many a conflict, many a doubt
Fighting and fears within without, Oh, Lamb of God, I come, I come."
And maybe that's where I need to take my fears and doubts today to help tamp down the rhetoric and boost hope and create space within and around me for truth and compassion to thrive.
Meanwhile, I think I'll make a BLT. Kale has it's place but not sandwiched between crispy bacon and juicy tomato slices. Are you still reading? Or have you gone to the kitchen or paused to order take-out?

“I believe in God nudges but in a climate where God talk gets used to justify all kinds of actions and reactions, I'm cautious to credit/blame God.” - YES! Thank you for stating this so clearly.
Well, thank you for reading and adding your encouragement, dear Alyssa. I just finished my BLT, but alas it ended up being a BT, no lettuce left in the fridge. But the bacon was all I really had a hankering for, anyway. The tomato was to make it look healthier.
I just love getting your posts, Jan! They always put a smile on my face even when they pose a challenge! Thanks for the chuckles, too!:))
Thanks, dear Jill. Great to hear from you and happy to challenge, as well as add a chuckle, Often laughter helps the lessons in life easier to swallow. Kinda like "a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down."
Jan, once again you have sent words well-seasoned. I am scheduled to speak at a small (15 women) retreat this coming weekend, and one of the topics we'll address is soulcare/ spiritual health. A symptom of soul neglect is the improper use of the tongue. I've written your friend Laura's line into my notes! I'm also not a kale fan. I tried baked kale chips once - still not a fan. Although Chick Fil-A does a pretty good kale salad. On a serious note, the lyrics to JAIM have never rung more true than in today's cultural and political climate: "Fighting and fears within, without" - for this we have Jesus.
Happy to add a line to your talk via my friend, Laura. I like Kale salad, but don't want Kale anywhere near my BLT. Talk about oil and water not mixing! Blessings on your retreat and those who come, dear Maggie. And I thought about myself, my family/friends, The Church, our country and this hurting world as I sang, "fighting and fears within and without." Lord, have mercy.
Love your blogging!!
Glue stick instead of chapstick!! Love this one for myself! Let your words be few Nancy.
That's a good one, for sure, dear Nancy. Thanks for reading and for your ongoing encouragement.
We sang Just As I Am yesterday in our Episcopal Church here in Denver. It brought back a memory of the first time Kathy and I attended what became our Lutheran Church in Dallas. As we got in line to go forward and receive communion, the congregation began singing Just as I Am, and we former Baptists realized that this too is an altar call for us who seek to follow Jesus. And we get to go forward every week.
Holy habits. Going to church, coming forward to pray, ask for and receive forgiveness. And all wrapped in grace and the deep sense that all-knowing God sees and loves us just as we are. Then works with us to help us become who we long to be. So good to hear from you, dear Dan.
I remember being blessed by a talk you and your dear Mom gave at Grace Chapel years ago. Do you still speak at women’s events? I now attend New Hope Chapel in Plymouth, Massachusetts. We have grown to 700 and ar building our own church in Plymouth and keeping our little church on Court Street to serve the homeless downtown and more. I think our women could really grow deeper with a talk from you, I know I did, all those years ago!
How encouraging to hear from you, dear Carol. And thank you for sharing the Grace Chapel connection as well as exciting things happening at your church. NEW HOPE is something we all need. Yes, I still speak, which still surprises me when invitations come. May God bless your church for choosing to serve the homeless. So many needs in our world. Thank you for being a reflection of God's heart.
"Some people need to use a glue stick instead of Chapstick…Just sayin’. “ Just perfect.
So thankful we can take all our fears to the Lamb of God! And thankful for so many of the great hymns of the past! But love the new songs too. <3
Me, too. Room for both and we need both. Sing on! As for the quote, it was a Gordon alum who sent that to me!! Gotta lover her!
