It's Time to Talk Turkey

Well, I don't know if you grew up hearing that phrase, like I did. For sure, it didn't mean my parents and I were going to chat about what size turkey to buy from the A&P grocery store. It meant I was in trouble for something I said or did, that I shouldn't have said or done.

So, I googled the phrase and learned that it probably originated between Native Americans and the Pilgrims in New England. And it had to do with wild turkeys, which my brother likes to hunt. As a matter of fact, he carves elaborate and effective turkey calls for hunters and collectors of such exquisite craftsmanship.

But I digress from the phrase. It appears it concerned bartering for those wild turkeys. Now, we like looking at art and seeing pilgrims and Native Americans enjoying a Thanksgiving feast together. All one big, happy family. But history reminds us that we broke trust and did great harm to them and ourselves. Trust is hard to restore. And families are complicated.

Soon we'll gather around tables laden with food and memories. Some will struggle to mend fences, rebuild trust. Hopefully, all will be grateful for something and enjoy the gift of laughter. Families are God's idea. It's not about assembling perfect people. It's about loving each other, no matter what.

Well, we're all in need of grace, forgiveness and more than seconds on mercy. So, come Thanksgiving, lets look for ways to pass around some kindness. And to look for the best in each other. And then encourage those traits to flourish.

There's something a lot sweeter than my sister Chris's pecan pie. It's not sweet tea, though I'll be spending Thanksgiving with my North Carolina family. It's unity. Not uniformity but like Psalm 133:1 says," How good and pleasant it is when God's people live together in unity!" (NIV)

Imagine that! More unity, less division. Everything's not worth a fight. Nor are people with different viewpoints, races, languages, genders, or religions our enemies. So enjoy feasting with friends and family. And maybe a parade, some football, or another slice of pie.

We all have so much for which to be grateful. And remember, you're a blessing to someone. So may you have so much for which to be grateful, there'll be no room left to worry about what's missing.

Happy Thanksgiving, you Big, Beautiful Blessings!
