Things that go Bump in the Night! A Note From Jan. Jud's Journal Entry Twenty-three.
October 31st. Halloween. Day +16 in Lunder 1032. Things do go bump in the night. Like white blood cells up from .02 to .29! YES!!!!
Heather’s birthday’s tomorrow. Matt wrote, “What a gift!”
Pumpkins abound. Maggie and Kate came to see their Popo (grandfather) last Sunday.
Two little pumpkins, jumping up and down behind the glass doors, awaiting the Great Pumpkin. He came masked and gloved (which he must do when he leaves his room), removed his hat and made a sweeping bow to his GRANDdaughters on the other side of the glass. They twirled, clapped, bounced, waved and shouted “We love you” from the otherside of the glass. Kate tried shaping her lips to form words through the crack in the door. Like trying to kiss through a keyhole. Or maybe like kissing a fish. No doubt about it, Popo was the treat.
Bumped into Patti Hanlon this morning at the receptionist’s desk on Lunder10. Some things (or folks) go bump in the daylight. She’d brought her friend, Mother Martha, to MGH. While Patti waitedfor Martha, she popped up here to pass along hugs and prayers. A treat. My soul’s feasting today.
An orange plastic pumpkin sits on the counter at the reception/call center on Lunder 10. It never stays empty for long. Can’t have flowers and fresh fruit up here but junk food’s ok, if individually wrapped. I stopped asking for explanations. Well, old plastic paunch gets fed often. Fun to watch the staff swarm that pumpkin when treats get replenished. Word of mouth.
Jud just opened his eyes, from some drug induced sleep, took one look at me and laughed. “You have a permanent smile on your mask. You look like a joker!” Could be worse. At least he didn’t comment on my eyebrows.
Last night when I left to head to the North End apartment, I said, “See you in the morning, love.” Jud grinned, “I’ll be ready to go.”
Today that feels more likely than yesterday.
Sometimes joy comes in the morning. Who’d have thought a bump in the night would bring the biggest treat!

Some people may be bagging their treats tonight but we are letting our treats (praise to God) out of the bag! "How good are the feet( in this case fingers) of them that bring good news. So thankful to hear of those white cells responding to take up the fight for Jud.
Your Red Sox friends are "keeping the faith" . Your beautiful writings chronicle not only Jud's brave journey, but also provide such a moving window into your loving marriage. You two are a true example of commitment and strength. You inspire us to be better. Love to you both, Elaine and Gary
Jan, your comment the other day about trying new makeup and "putting on eyebrows" was so funny, I couldn't stop laughing! Chad's comment was hilarious !! I could just see you looking "permanently startled"! We were with our kids in VA and they wondered what was so funny. It took me a long time and tears running down my face to tell them! Laughter is good medicine, isn't it? What would we do without it? Thanks for giving me a good chuckle today as you referenced your "permanent smile on your mask" to go with your permanently startled eyebrows! I love you, Jan ... and we are over the moon about Jud's blood counts! It won't be long and he WILL be going home!! Hallelujah!
Today as David and I were praying for you it was as though we could feel the blood count rising -- We thought "today is the day" -- Yes, Lord! We only wish we could have done a Tim Tebow signal of thanksgiving. We are shouting and singing and praising God!
I pray that the bump will soar to a mountain of good news! Thank you for sharing the ups and downs so honestly so we can be specific in our prayers. Blessings to all who are working so hard for Jud as well as the family and friends that enfold you, whether in person or through prayer.

So many "treats" in response to all-out , earnest prayer from the masses, friends! Seeing Maggie and Kate was no doubt the spark both they and and you two needed. What is there about the very sight of our "grands" that
makes us think tomorrow it will be better? And those cells "bumping up"

Praise God for rising cell counts! I love this prayer thing with God. I will keep it going. It is a humbling experience to pray and watch what He does. And so many people are doing it. Love & blessings to you both!

Great news....a treat not a trick. I love Jud's humor....he hasn't lost the twinkle in his eye even when he's drugged. And I love the tenderness in your relationship...it's always been there too...from the beginning. Love you two.

Jan and Jud, I work in the home of JoDee and Peter Herschend. Talked to Jud a few times when Anne E and Jacob were students. Have been following your journal entries and praying for Jud, you and the family. Praying things would go BUMP in the night. Praise God. Psalms 46 ever present "God is our refuge and strength," "The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress." "“Be still, and know that I am God;" and today "Come and see what the Lord has done," Continuing in praise and prayer with thanks.
