Updates from Jud and Jan

Dear Jud's Gone Home. A Note From Jan. Jud's Journal Entry Thirty-six.

Thursday morning, November 20, 2014

Jud’s gone home. I never wanted to say, “’til death do us part” in our marriage ceremony. Didn’t want to speak that truth that is irrevocable on earth.

Chad, Heather and I were with Jud when he sipped his last earth-breath and his moaning ceased. Ours continues.

Heather’s gone to Boston To scoop up Matt, Luke, Lily and Basil at Logan Airport T-shirt cuddle time Lord, have mercy, once again.

Before packing up to leave Kaplan House in the wee hours of this morning, I pulled up the sheet covering Jud’s feet. I kissed them Those marriage saving size 14 feet

Somewhere in the Bible it says, “Blessed are the feet of those who bring the Gospel … good news.” YOU brought that good news to our marriage, dear Jud, and to our family. And to the challenges and responsibilities God entrusted to you.

You’ve got family who’ve been tapping their toes on that other side awaiting your arrival I imagine them running, arms reaching to scoop you from the edge of earth to an unimaginable place of beauty with music even better than Fernando’s, probably

You got your miracle. You’re home. “And when I come to die And when I come to die And when I come to die Give me Jesus.”

And I sing, “When I am afraid Give me Jesus.”

And, somehow, by faith and trust in the God we both LOVE and a t-shirted family held up by an unbelievable NET Life will go on. Different.

But life. and in the safe hands of Life itself … or Himself, really.  A miracle!

I’ll LOVE you forever, Jud. You made it HOME. Still standing. On beautiful size 14 feet.

Dear Jan, You don't know me, but I am Meredith's cousin, Jill. She is my dearest friend and has walked many paths with me over the years. I just want you to know how much your writing means to me. So many things you say or songs referenced resonate so deeply with me. My husband, Paul, died of cancer almost 10 years ago. I still love him so very much and miss him sorely. "How Firm a Foundation" was the hymn that played over in my head on my morning walks during his long illness. And "Give Me Jesus" or Chris Rice's, "Come to Jesus" speak to me now.
Thank you for sharing so painfully and so beautifully. I, too, love to write and so appreciate another person's heartfelt words. God has given me an amazingly fulfilling life since Paul died. There is so much grace but also still loss. One important thing I learned during the cancer years was that I could hold two seemingly mutually exclusive feelings in my heart at the same time. As I wrote to a friend at the time, "Can all be well and still be miserable?"
Thank you for sharing so deeply and generously. I hope it helps you and I am praying for you.

Dear Jan, I only became aware of this Caring Bridge site after I heard the news of Jud's passing. I went back and read from the beginning and weep with you and Chad and Heather and the rest of the family for your loss. Your ability to write so eloquently even while your heart is aching is truly a gift from God. Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers in the challenging days ahead. Thank you for sharing your heart so openly. Much love to you.

My Jesus, I love Thee, I know Thou art mine;
For Thee all the follies of sin I resign;
My gracious Redeemer, my Savior art Thou;
If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, ’tis now.
I love Thee because Thou hast first loved me,
And purchased my pardon on Calvary’s tree;
I love Thee for wearing the thorns on Thy brow;
If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, ’tis now.
I’ll love Thee in life, I will love Thee in death,
And praise Thee as long as Thou lendest me breath;
And say when the death dew lies cold on my brow,
If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, ’tis now.
In mansions of glory and endless delight,
I’ll ever adore Thee in heaven so bright;
I’ll sing with the glittering crown on my brow,
If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, ’tis now.

We weep for your loss, but cannot help but rejoice that JUD is now home with so many who have gone before him. God is faithful and will not abandon us. Thank God for the resurrection that will be ours some day. We will meet in the heavens. You are all in our prayers.

With much love,

Jan, your beautiful and touching words are such a fine tribute to Jud ,your life together and your faithfulness to God. May he rest in peace and the peace of the lord be always you.

Dear Jan,
Our prayers are with you and your family. Thank you so much for sharing Jud's brave journey in the last few months with us. The love you have for each other is so rare these days, and so inspirational. May you feel comforted knowing Jud is in a safer place where there is no pain or tears. Let's celebrate Jud's life - one that has touched and transformed so many! Love you, Ken and Alice

We're just sad, Jan, and struck again by the awfulness of death for those left to suffer the pain of the loss of a life's companion, father, grandfather, friend . . . What an unspeakable gift then for you--for all of us--to know the truth of the words of comfort and confidence expressed by your Christian sisters and brothers here, reminding us of something--Someone--greater than this loss, loving in His ways and victorious in His plans. Our God is an awesome God . . . David and Nancy

Alice Shea

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Thank you so much for sharing your journey with all of us. I hope I can remember the courage of you and Jud when my time comes.

Lillian Harper

For he shall give his angels charge over you, to keep you in all his ways.

Dearest Jan and your sweet and loving family,
Our warm, loving, comforting, consoling hugs enfold you, Jan. Oh, how sad we are and mourn with you and for you this enormous loss of your dearest Jud. Sadness overwhelms us! For you, Jan, and for Heather and Chad and their families: Most merciful God, whose wisdom is beyond our understanding; deal graciously with Jan and her children and grandchildren in their grief. Surround then with your love, that they may not be overwhelmed by their loss, but have confidence in your goodness, and strength to meet the days to come; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
And, for Jud: Into your hands, O Merciful Saviour, we commend your servant Jud Acknowledge, and we humbly beseech you, a sheep of your own fold, a lamb of your own flock, a sinner of their own redeeming. Receive him into the arms of your mercy, into the blessed arms of thy mercy, into the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into thy glorious company of the saints in light. Amen..

We love you, Jan, and will pray for all of you. God bless you!

When the little Caring Bridge icons kept popping on my phone, I suspected the message associated with them. Thank you for sharing the journey with us. As was true the first time you welcomed us into the CCC President's group, your heart touched our hearts. The love between you encouraged us. The honesty and transparency of your sharing awed us. Your trust in God's care encouraged us.

Jud was a leader among leaders. He was always willing to take on another assignment in addition to his heavy duties as Gordon's president. Together, you were a couple among couples - helping us to see what "better together" looked like. While we know that Jud is in a better place, the pain of missing him is real.

Our ongoing love and prayers are with you. We know that you have the comfort of great memories, the presence of loving family and friends, and the assurance of God's Spirit. We have the blessing of knowing you and having been cared for by you - and that leaves a hurt in the empty place in our hearts.

Jan, we pray for God's richest blessing of comfort for you and your family. We rejoice with Jud that he is safely home, but we grieve with you. Thanks to both of you for a long obedience in the work of God.

Dear Jan and Family,
We are so, so sorry for your loss. We will keep you and your family in our prayers, praying especially that you all will be knitted even closer together in love during this time of loss and remembrance.
The thought of family "tapping their toes on that other side" brings me to tears. "Here he comes!" Think of their eyes meeting! Precious tears. We are blessed to know you, Jan.
Much love to you all,
Steve, for the family

Dear Jan,
The harbinger of eternal life has said, "Well done, Jud, good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of your master." While we were praying for the miracle of his physical healing, how could we forget the miracle of his life? A life of faith, a life of courage in the face of terrible suffering, a life of servant leadership, a life of touching other lives - family, friends, colleagues and students. We are grateful for having known that miracle. May you, your children and grandchildren now experience a comfort and peace that cannot be fully understood, consoled by your own wonderful memories of life with Jud, by the surrounding love of family and friends, and by that unshakable faith that life is, in fact, eternal. Our love and continuing prayers.

Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his faithful servants. (Psalm 116:15)

Oh Jan, on behalf of my family and the New Hope Tutorials community I extend deepest sympathy & prayers for peace & comfort. I didn't know you had established a presence here on CB . . . we have been using the site this past year for updates on my husband's baby brother until he passed away November 6th on the west coast. I'm grateful that our CB account let me access your announcement of Jud's going Home. It is the most beautiful, loving tribute to one's spouse I have ever read . . . a compelling illustration of 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 . . . It will be shared broadly.

Much love to you,
Linda Libert

Laura and Greg Carmer

Dear Jan, all of the Carmers are aching for you and your family over the missing of Jud/Dad/Popo. We are mourning with you, praying for you, thanking God for Jud's life and faith and rejoicing with you over his homegoing and all that means that we can only imagine. Thank you for letting us share this journey with you. We love you!

Our dear friend, Jan, this was the message long expected and yet deeply dreaded. Early this morning, Sharon and I sat together in silence and wept. No more dinners in Scottsdale talking over the business of our common calling. No more rich conversation in Palm Desert over cheap Mex. Our friend Jud has left us without him.

Oh my, what a model Jud has been for me through the years: a faithful leader, courageous and bold, clear and decisive, and yet always, always, grace-filled and generous. Jud was always my go-to-guy when I wanted to know what was really going on. That was a special gift, you know. Oh my, I will miss this dear friend! And yet we claim such rich and enduring memories.

Know too, Jan, how much your love for Jud, and your love for each other, would always shine through whatever trouble or challenge. You both taught us how to do our calling together. You were models for us, models of love, models of faithfulness in work, models of deep and abiding faith in the goodness of our Lord. We will be forever grateful.

I now shift my prayers each morning to focus on you, Jan. May you be surrounded by the love of your dear family, the outpouring of love from all of us who have called you friend, and the profound mercy and love that passes understanding in this time of enormous grief.

Sharon and I send our love and our deep gratitude for your friendship.

God bless you in the days ahead, dear Jan.

Translation of a beautiful Hymn I now in Spanish...
Dearest Dr. C is is heaven. No more pain, no more suffering. He is now completely healthy and happy...He is with God.
Oh, I can't wait to see him again in Heaven and give him a big hug!
What a comfort that is, that we shall meet again. Thank you Jesus.
I cannot keep from crying, yet I felt so at peace today...I was certain of a miracle.

Mrs. C: We are with you! We love you! We mourn, grief and cry with you! Yet, we also rejoice in the fact that we shall all meet with Dr. C again, in Heaven.

Oh dear Jan, Heather and Chad... indescribable sorrow will be a companion for many days to come.. And a comforting, merciful peace and numbness.
I awakened around 1 a.m. and didn't sleep again until around 6 a.m. Strange though it may seem, perhaps the fact that Jud knew Eric made losing Jud more intense. I don't know.... but many tears flowed here in Maine in the wee morning hours - and now. Comforting to think of heavenly embraces!! I cherish the big hug from Jud last time I saw him a year or so ago. And brief time and update with you, Jan, at church a couple weeks ago. Tears flowing around the world could fill a lake today. God bless you all....

David and Joyce Dixon

Dear Jan, We continue to pray. And we wept in each others' arms. One of my oldest, dearest friends. Did I ever tell him that? Why don't we take the time, when we can, to express things, good things. You are all very much in our hearts. Love is the greatest of all, because it never ends. We will love in eternity. I wish terribly that I could get on a direct flight to Logan, and have even thought of doing it. However, I will be having very minor surgery on Monday. But we'll be there with you, in our hearts and by our prayers.
Love, David and Joyce

So beautiful Jan. Thank you for giving us the privilege of being a part of the NET. Snuggle those kids and t-shirts up. What an incredible legacy those size 14 (wow..really?!) feet left. Love.

Dearest Jaja
I don't know what to say... except that I am so thankful for your loving family that surrounds you. Allow the Love of Him to heal your aching heart. We send our love, prayers, and tall Viking Hugs your way....

Into your hands, O merciful Savior, we commend your servant Jud. Acknowledge, we humbly beseech you, a sheep of your own fold, a lamb of your own flock, a sinner of your own redeeming. Receive him into the arms of your mercy, into the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of the saints in light. Amen.

Christine Jensen

In my weeping, I pray your joy because of Jud and in Jesus will rise and carry you on.

Jan,
Jesus has welcomed him with loving arms and tells His congregation in heaven: "Here is my beloved Jud, who fought the good fight throughout his life with compassion, integrity, courage, and deep faith. Well done good and faithful servant." Holding you up in prayer in this time of grieving.

beloved jan...ah...no words...just deep sighs...and tears. We will see each other I'm sure, very soon. In the meantime be assured of our love, our prayers, our willingness to do whatever you need done. Anything. I heard the music of "Give Me Jesus" while reading your loving posting, and trembled. Dearest Jan,

We wept as we read your beautiful words. Dave prayed and cried tears of, well….we can't imagine this world without Jud. Glad for the release from pain and suffering, for all of you, but praying for that new pain of losing your beloved. Please know of our deep love and continued prayers, Jan. And I can imagine that your work of loving and supporting your family, softening the blow to the grandchildren, will continue. I am glad they have loved you well. May God give you strength and peace for the days ahead.
With all our love,

Thankful for those size 14 feet!! Sending our love to all of you. We still need our Lord's mercy each day.
