No Turning Back. . . .A Note From Jan. Jud's Journal Entry Thirty-four.
Listening to Jud’s labored breathing while I write from a new temporary home. Kaplan House in Danvers. Hospice.
The miracle I longed for isn’t happening. At least not in the way any of us hoped and prayed for. A really big miracle making Popo “all better,” as the grandchildren hoped.
Not sure what constitutes a true miracle apart from the ones in the Bible and some recorded by Saints. Things like the blind seeing, lame leaping, deaf hearing.
Today I began wondering if I get too stuck on a physical kind of miracle. Could a miracle be more mental? spiritual? Like having done all TO STILL STAND . . .even lying down, vulnerable in a hospital gown, with swollen feet, belly and legs, with sores and cancer creep. Declaring even without words that God loves me and you to the last drop, to the last breath.
Maybe humor is miraculous when nothing funny’s going on in your body … like yesterday when the doctor came to assess Jud. Dr. Ballen began by saying, “I need to ask you a few questions.” “The month is August!” Jud responded with a twinkle.
Gordon and Gail coming to MGH today toting food and fifty years of friendship. Martha welcoming us to the Kaplan House. Friends at both places, helping Jud transition. Heather, Chad, Kristina, Maggie and Kate filling this room with love and gratitude. Matt back in California letting Lily, Luke and Basil know their Popo is dying. Heather asking for three of her Dad’s t-shirts to bring home for her kids to cuddle. It’s not about the t-shirts, it’s that they’d matter. Soft love.
So now, to bed. Kristina and Heather sleeping on the floor beside me at Kaplan House. Love that doesn’t quit in tough times. Not so ordinary any more … Miraculous?
Jud tending all of us through his choices … through his life long decision to FOLLOW JESUS. No matter what. Saying with the old hymn, “I have decided to follow Jesus” … when he was a young boy. “No turning back” … even when transplants fail and cancer creeps back. Deciding to love and trust God, choosing time and time again to follow Jesus even when no rescue comes in the Lion’s Den.
Looks like a miracle. Faith . . .having done all … still standing.

Dear Jud and Jan, This is what I told my kids two nights ago at dinner before we prayed for you both and your kids and grandkids, that "Dr. Carlberg and Mrs. Carlberg are people who showed daddy and I what it means to follow Jesus with your whole life," that we strive to follow their example in our lives and marriage and as parents and in ministry and that we are so, so sad that Dr. Carlberg is dying, sad for what he's leaving, sad for Mrs. Carlberg and their whole family, sad that sickness and death are realities of the world we live in, but, oh, how grateful we are for the testimony that they live out before us, that now they are showing us what it means to follow Jesus in the face of death. As I've prayed for you both in recent weeks, I keep thinking of Harrod & Funcke' "Lion Song." This picture of two lions sleeping in each other's arms, whose jungle is a place of refuge, safety, and strength for countless others. Their gift is living into the call to keep our eyes on the horizon of God's help, mercy, and hope, even in the worst of storms. Thank you for living into that call before us, in the worst of storms, in the face of death. Jud, I can recount verbatim many of the conversations we had when I was in college. They are anchor and guide to me still, as are the words of wisdom you and Jan both spoke to two eager college kids making the audacious decision to get married. Thank you. We honor you, we thank God for you, we pray for you with all we've got in these tenderest, most vulnerable of days. Ever yours, with deep gratitude and with tears, Becky, for Will too
Jud and Jan, No Matter What still stands for us as well. We've also done a lot of reflecting on What is a Healing? Still have questions 10 years later. Through it all, keeping eyes locked on Jesus.
Jud, there are other Oaks of Righteousness that have endured this struggle. You have a whole host awaiting you. Glad to see humor rides out to the end. Glad to see God peace in you. We can only imagine what that day will be like...
Jan and kids, my heart cries familiar tears for all of you. He is faithful and will carry you through. I wish I could be there to comfort all of you.
Thank you Jud for so faithfully loving Jesus and following His call on your life. He has done great things! Well done. We love you all.
Dear Jud and Jan,
Your lives have been a strong and wonderful example to Wendy and me for many years. Thank you. Both of us, like so many, have had you on our hearts and minds and in our prayers. At church this evening we read in the book of Jude and once again I thought right away of you.
------
But you, dear friends, must build each other up in your most holy faith, pray in the power of the Holy Spirit, and await the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will bring you eternal life. In this way, you will keep yourselves safe in God’s love....
Now all glory to God, who is able to keep you from falling away and will bring you with great joy into his glorious presence without a single fault. All glory to him who alone is God, our Savior through Jesus Christ our Lord. All glory, majesty, power, and authority are his before all time, and in the present, and beyond all time! Amen.
Jude (NLT)

You have reminded us of our great Hope. Instead of cowering in fear in these days, you both have lived courageously and transparently and taught us to look toward our eternal Hope - that glorious Presence. Thank you so much. We'll see you There.
With love, Steve and Wendy
Your word touch us deeply and bring new meaning to the word "miracle". Your lives are a testimony of God's love. May you find peace as you rest in His grip. Praying for your family-Ruth and Robin Baker
Hot tears are streaming down my face as I read and reflect on your words. I'm thanking the Lord this snowy night for Jud's life and faith and service, and am humbly asking for such a faith as he and Jan have so unyieldingly held, always.
You are both still teaching us so much. My prayers are with you tonight.
Dear Jud,
Your wit and gentleness are a treasure! Thank you for your care for me and all who worked with us at Gordon these many years. It was good work. Now you have more hard, good work to do. The God of Abraham, Sarah, Tim, John, and a countless host of others stands and walks with you, giving you the last bits of wit and wisdom you need to love and be loved by your wonderful family. Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Thanks be to God!
Oh Jud, oh Jan. May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you. May the Lord turn his face toward you and grant you peace.
Jan, Pete and I grieve with you yet you so beautifully write words of hope, humor and trust. We love you and Jud. This is a life-taking pilgrimage for both of you yet God smiles and says in his miraculous control, he loves you. Hugs...
As my father said when my mother was finally released from her long illness, "SHE is in the land of the Living; it is we who are in the land of the dying." Blessings and grace be with you Jan, Heather, and Chad, as you pray, sing, and love Jud into the presence of Christ. I keep you all close to my heart these days. Jennie-Rebecca

Dearest Dr. and Mrs. C: God is in control. I wish I were there...I wish I had been there...You are so dear to me, to us! I never knew that when we first met meeting you meant meeting my new US parents, a love for life. I saw you everyday, being 'normal people' that had a more than normal, an exceptional and true passion and love for God. It is then more than 'normal' to after 'having done all' your faith still stands.
God bless you, dearest Dr. C! My hero! My mentor, my Christian example, my American father...One thing I know for sure: No matter what: God will and is holding you in His arms, He holds your hand. Bless you dearest Carlberg family! Bless you always.
Love you, love you and praying for all of you.
Your words mean so much to those of us who wish we could be there with you. You are each being supported by so many people -- and with so many prayers. My prayers, these past few days, have been that you each feel His love, comfort, and peace. And that you are given quiet strength and an extra touch or look or word from Jud. The sunrise in Colorado was quite beautiful today -- a glimpse into our Heaven. Love to all.
Dearest Jan and Jud, Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!...for your kind love and sweet friendship, your always faithful and steady...compassionate and loving...wise and trusted leadership during your years as President and First Lady of Gordon and for making it the place we call "HOME!" Well done, extremely well done, thou good and faithful servants of Christ our Saviour, our Shepherd, and our King. Jud and Jan, Heather and Matt, Lily, Luke, and Basil, Chad and Kristina, Maggie and Kate, Christ be with you, comforting you and protecting you and blessing you with His peace and love.
Love, love, Lillian and Bill
Dear Jan (and Jud,)
Our hearts lean your way as we continue to pray for Jud's miraculous healing on this side of heaven. Sharon and I just wish we could be there to hug you, pray for you, laugh with you and Jud as we first began doing with you 39 years ago when we bonded with you both in laughter over a different, much more trivial kind of life challenge. Please tell your dear husband and our special friend, Jud how much we have loved him (and you) since we began commiserating together over the trials of life. In our hearts and prayers we are helping you right now by pulling off the rafters and breaking open the ceiling to gently lower Jud into the loving and healing arms of Jesus, so He can say the words one more time, "Your faith has made you whole.Take up your bed and walk." We pray for this miracle even now for you, Jud. We love you both Jud and Jan. Ken and Sharon (knwolgemuth@taylor.edu)
Holding you all close in prayer...grateful for the beautiful example of faith you set every day. Much love to you, Jud & Jan! <3
Sending you love
Dear ones, I am writing through my tears. My heart is with you. Yes, our puny minds can't quite grasp miracles. Well, perhaps the minds of saints and poets, of which I am neither.
One miracle I am sure of is the miracle of Hospice. Kristina will have told you how much they helped us in our misery and grief. I am so glad you are all, yes, all in their care.
I haven't opened my ancient 1928 Book of Common Prayer in I don't even know how many years, but I found myself turning to it yesterday and today. Maybe those wise elders have the words that fail me.
I found something to share:
O Merciful God, and heavenly father, who hast taught us in thy holy Word that thou does not willingly afflict or grieve the children of men; Look with pity, we beseech thee, upon the sorrows of thy servants for whom our prayers are offered. Remember them, O Lord, in mercy; endue their souls with patience; comfort them with a sense of thy goodness; lift up thy countenance upon them, and give them peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
My heart is breaking for you all. How precious these moments. And how precious our dear Savior's great words, "because I live, you shall live also." Much love, Judy
My dear Jud and Jan, I doubt you have any idea of the depth of admiration, gratitude and love Anna and I have for you both. Gifts so meaningful and unexpected ...
- A hand-written note sent to Rhodes Gym in 1983, simply saying "We're so glad you're here" ...
- A kind word in a faculty meeting about a tenure paper ...
- A beautiful table cloth adorned with golden horns sent from overseas ... just because ...
- Listening from my seat in the orchestra to you and Jan reading of the Christmas story on those magical nights ... ah, the Advent Festivals! ...
- A snowy, snowy, sparsely-attended Strauss horn concerto, a hug and the words ... "I wouldn't have missed it!"...
- That cherubic smile, and the quip ... "Looks like kinesiology is going to make it after all ... ", (referring to a secure place in a long-awaited Science Center) ...
- Affirming words and amazing tangible support for a wild idea like the CBMW ...
- Lunch in Rye after my mother's death when you took the time to comfort me ...
- Steady, wise, visionary leadership through each and every role you played at Gordon ...
- Above all, a heart that loves God and longs for Him ...
Much love to you Jud, and to you Jan as you move through this most mysterious and amazing miracle of LIFE ... Peace to you both and to your amazing family.
Love, Peter and Anna
We love you and are grateful for your words and spirit and humor and faith, while so sad for your pain. Praying for peace, with love. Rini

Jan and Jud-- lifting you up in prayer each moment. We have that blessed assurance that God is sovereign in and through all things (something I learned well from many Bussell sermons years ago), even in those acutely difficult moments like these. all our love, admiration, and thanks for all you have done over the years-- RICK SWEENEY
Our hearts ache with you as you release Jud into the welcoming arms of Christ and his new home. Thank you Jud for fighting a good fight!
The Lord’s loved ones are precious to Him.
It grieves Him when they die. Psalm 116:15
Just remember, "There are people in this life who never really leave us even when they go around a bend in the road and disappear from view!"
Hug each other for us. We love you all.
Dear Jud and Jan,
Words seem so inadequate for the grief that I share with you, but Scripture speaks. I think of I Cor 15:55-57 "Where O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?..... But thanks be to God!!! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!!!" And as others have mentioned great hymns of our faith, the song that comes to me is "My hope is built on nothing less....." Jan, I am lifting you in prayer as you stand on that solid Rock.
Jud and Jan, I have been soaking in Psalm 27:4 the past several days - partly because of a sermon I am to preach on "Thanks-living" this week-end but more perhaps because I am finding such profound focus as Nancy and I pray for you both. Jud you have lived by faith in the House of the Lord and soon will live there by sight. We have seen the "beauty of the Lord" in your work, family and so many other endeavors leaving those of us who have known and come to love you with fresh revelations of our Lord. And soon the inquiring mind He gave you will be filled with the ultimate joy of discovering all He has and will be as your eternal "way, Truth and life". All of this will remain as the "t-shirts" we cuddle and treasure as we celebrate your life among us. Dave & Nancy
Oh Jan! You and Jud are the miracle - for all of us! You'll have that needed ticket when you get to the train station. (Corrie's words have helped so much when we feel off the rails..) Love to all of you
Our hearts hurt so much for all of you. We both woke in the night praying for you. It's hard to believe that our treasured friend, Jud is slipping into eternity where the rest of us will follow - probably sooner than we realize. So grateful that our true Elder Brother Jesus came to rescue, redeem and bring us home to the Father. "May your anchors hold through this stormy gale" and may Jesus bring you safely home, Jud. There are no words to say how much we love and treasure you both....so many wonderful memories of times together, laughter, Rook,, travels, camping in the rain, board meetings and now tears and sorrow.
Our grandson, Garrett is flying in for a visit today or we would be on a plane to Boston. Marla and Rich, Mark and Sue send their love and prayers too. You were guiding lights to them in those formative years at Gordon. You've left your distinctive mark on their lives and we're grateful. We are praying for Heather and Chad...what strong support...and your precious grandchildren for whom this will bring such sorrow and disappointment.
Just know our love and prayers are with you. May songs and love surround Jud on this last journey...wish we could climb on his bed and sing together with you. Hugs to you all.
Jud
I also want to say thank you for you humor. I am blessed to have become acquainted with that part of you. What an honor it has been too see the beauty of your lives and what God intends for us on this earth.
As you journey on we are there with you in the communion of saints here on earth and beyond, walking the journey with you in prayer, shedding tears on the way. May God's light shine brightly on your path as He welcomes you home.
We are all heartbroken. Yet we are grateful that you are at Kaplan House. Such a beautiful home away from home. We are also grateful to hear that humor still shines through. I found this quote from Ann Morrow Lindberg's little gem " gift form the Sea" the other day.
“Don't wish me happiness
I don't expect to be happy all the time...
It's gotten beyond that somehow.
Wish me courage and strength and a sense of humor.
I will need them all.”
― Anne Morrow Lindbergh, Gift from the Sea
We know that there will be soon come a time when the humor will cease. This is precious time, God-given time. Please know you are utterly surrounded by friends all over the globe who are sharing this journey with you, on their knees. If there is anything we can do, or anything you need, anytime of day or night….

..."no matter what"--that's the key, because the "what" is usually not what we had hoped and prayed for. That's why I like the honesty of Jewish prayer. Tevye in Fiddler looking to heaven as the village burns, asking "What's this?" No answer comes, but he continues on in his life under the cope of heaven as before.
Jud and Jan: My devotional this morning was 1 John 5:4 and I am praying this for you and your family this morning. "for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith." You have overcome the world by trusting and following Jesus - well done good and faithful servants. Praying His peace surrounds you today and always. Blessings, Brad.
"Faint not nor fear, His arms are near; He changeth not, and thou art dear. Only believe, and thou shalt see That Christ is all in all to thee." Amen. (Wm. Boyd) Brother Jud and Sister Jan, we've got you covered until the final act. You are in our prayers and thoughts constantly. May God's peace and grace be with you this day.
May His abiding presence be your comfort. Thank you for your faithful witness and warm humor!
God be with you, Jud and Jan. We are physical beings and want physical healing, but God whispers to our spiritual side that sometimes the healing we pray for will happen the other side of the veil. I love the old hymns and what they say to us. My anchor holds, cradled in the everlasting arms, rock of ages cleft for me let me hide myself in thee, and the old rugged cross which we will exchange someday for a crown. May your lifetimes of faith fill you all with comfort at this difficult time of transition.
Carol
You are a steady light in the valley of shadows. You are guiding us toward the Light Who shines in the darkness. I follow you with deep gratitude for your faith, hope and love. May the grace and mercy of God surround and carry you through these days.
Jan and Jud, Peter and I have prayed and cried with you!! I marvel at the miracle of faith that we have that sustains, gives hope, strength & determination.. and then can rest in the knowledge that God does all things well and our final wholeness and rest comes when we are with Him! Jud and you, Jan shine and reflect His glory!! Thank you so very much for sharing your story allowing us to see Gods work in your lives!
Prayers continue for all of you!!!!!
I don't know why, but I am reminded by your words of a prayer I first heard in Duke University chapel: "In life, in death, and life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone." Prayers and thoughts for all of you.
That, in the midst of this great trial, you all are able to gather community, encourage faith and impart hope with honesty good cheer - this is a miracle. Affirming the goodness of this life, even in these days, anchors us all more deeply in the great hope that, in His time, this too will be made right. With you in our prayers

Thank you, Jud and Jan, for all of your gifts to us--not least of which is so generously sharing your story now. We love you!

We love you!
..."no matter what"--that's the key, because the "what" is usually not what we had hoped and prayed for.

So true, so Jud. Firmness of purpose, with just enough flexibility -- and humor. Amazing! But what a gift to you all, and to us all through your sharing. It helps, even as our hearts break for you. You have been amazing friends -- and you always will be. We thank you, and we love you.

Twenty three years ago when, as I held my bible closed on its spine, I asked God to please give me a sign that He was with me, this is the verse He gave me as I released the sides of my bible and a verse that has been written on my heart since, Isaiah 55: 8&9, "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the Lord. "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts." Those verses were my miracle of trust and peace. May they bring blessing to you...I continue to hold you in prayer my Jan as I weep for all that you are going through. So thankful that God led me to you that January day so many years ago...xo
And you bring all of us into this miracle with you!

LOVE YOU...sooooo grateful that God allowed our paths to cross.
Thank you both for being such special messengers, love givers...awesome servants of our Lord... to all the 1000s you've touched on your journey...including friends in Westerlo NY. OXOXOXOXOXOXO
You continue to be in my thoughts and prayers...with many tears seeping from my eyes and heart. Will miss you here, but am thankful we will have a joyful reunion someday with bodies that are pain and disease free.
Standing with you albeit from afar, with eyes on eternity, and in the meantime...simple, trusting release. Praying rest over your souls. In Christ, Steve and Ruthie
