HOMEmade Chicken Soup. A Note From Jan.
A simple but precious gift came by email: “Want to come to our house for dinner?” Imagine. A younger faculty family welcoming an old widow woman. Me in the bleak midwinter.
Oh, did I ever want to come. I love this couple, this family, well acquainted with grief.
They have a new baby. Healthy, handsome Anders. Easy, understandable time to bolt the door not fling it open to a widow But they flung and we feasted.
HOMEmade chicken noodle soup (with fresh parsley) fresh bread and butter cheese and wine (Trader Joe’s … my favorite) Haagen Daz ice cream Chocolate or Vanilla or some of each. “Some of each, please.” served with a little milk to make it a little slushy like a thick milkshake (their idea). Yum x10!
Food fit for royalty and I, a needy one, lapped it up. Not literally or word would get out.
Real hospitality. Warm and welcoming.
Years ago, when we were newlywed and Jud in seminary resources were rather limited. But Sunday nights we feasted with friends, Campbell’s tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches … a predictable feast. Only decision … Our apartment or yours?
I found it hard to leave Tuesday night and drive back to Gloucester. Found myself talking to Jud as I drove home. He’s good company. Always a great listener. Then words came through that old Swedish hymn, Day by Day,
“He whose heart is kind beyond all measure gives unto each day what He deems best …”
Today God knew I needed chicken soup (with fresh parsley), some ice cream and the company of angels disguised as a family in Newburyport.
Thank you.

Thanks for this, Jan. They are wonderful people and great friends. We are sure that you also brought joy to their home.
It was a treasure being with you last night. Safe journeys.
We keep praying.
Blessings,
Roger and Karen
How well we remember those Sunday night "feasts" . Wish we were there to share feast and grief again together. Glad your net is holding!
Oh YAY!!!! <3
Joyce makes delicious homemade chicken soup. And we would even get ahold of some Haagen Daz if you could come! But it's a lot farther than Newburyport. I think we will be there before you are here. Seriously. Tomato soup (local supermarket brand) and grilled cheese sandwiches are still a staple with us. Jan, you are amazing. We love you so much! David and Joyce
I plan to pay that example forward. Sweet dreams tonight.
